If you're like one of the 10,000 or so buyers who have been lining up for a Toyota Fortuner every year since its local release in 2005, this minor model change (or face-lift) should either convince you to bite the bullet or make you just sit by the fence until a more substantial model change comes along.
Not much has been changed with the Fortuner since it started to lord over the SUV class seven years ago. It was updated once in 2009. And like clockwork, Toyota has once again changed its best-selling SUV's looks to conform to whatever model is raking in the sales. For this latest face-lift, the Fortuner is attempting to emulate the Camry.
STYLING
Taking a cue from the success of the previous-generation Camry's looks, the 2012 Fortuner's front end has been reworked to accommodate, well, more chrome. "Classy" may be the word that best describes the effect of the new multi-slot grille and aggressive bumper design.
Even the headlights now protrude past the fenders, similar to the Camry and Altis makeovers. There's also a touch of European influence here as the face-lift also brings with it headlight washers as standard.
The design renaissance, however, seems to have stopped at the front because the rear end seems to have gone a generation backward with taillights that look like they were lifted off the Altezza parts bin. Overall, though, the cosmetic upgrades make this midsize SUV look sharper and less awkward.
INTERIOR
While the pre-face-lift Fortuner did attempt to improve its interiors with beige coloring, it seemed to raise another complaint altogether as customers whined about the finish being prone to stains. To answer this, the 2012 Fortuner features a dark-gray center tunnel console, along with the upper ends of the door sidings.
To retain some refinement, faux dark wood lines the center dash, window switches and the shift knob. Also, what's new across all Fortuner variants for this year is the 6.5-inch 2DIN monitor. Although for the 2.7 G 4x2 Gas units, the navigation function has been disabled.
The steering wheel has also been redesigned with silver accents. Meanwhile, the gauge cluster is now a flat, one-piece affair and showcases Optitron meters that turn blue at night.
Despite the interior rework, the cabin and its resulting space still feel similar to that of the Innova. Just look at the space-hogging third-row seat foldout implementation. But if you're used to Toyota's interior design ethos, everything from the second row up is logically laid out, making the driving and riding experience easy and pleasing.
ENGINE PERFORMANCE
The 2.7-liter 2TR-FE engine is continued for the minor model change. While it offers 158hp and 241Nm of pulling power, we still feel it is a bit short at the top end. The smooth-shifting four-speed automatic that the 4x2 Fortuner 2.7 G comes with makes it more of a cruiser SUV than a performance machine. With the Fortuner's fuel consumption only hovering around the 7km-8km per liter range, the CRDi-equipped competition does offer more zing and day-to-day fuel savings.
RIDE AND HANDLING
After parking the Fortuner at a gas station on the way back from an out-of-town trip, curious bystanders immediately began checking the car out. Clearly, there's a strong interest in this model even after seven years.
The first thing the small crowd asked me was: "Has Toyota fixed the ride?"
Well, yes and no. Yes, it is a tad softer and less jarring, with a stronger hint of roll. But no, because it is still firm and truck-like, nowhere near as comfortable as unibody compact SUVs.
VERDICT
You would think that given the Japanese model-life cycle for cars, an all-new Fortuner would've come out by now. But perhaps it's a matter of priorities at the moment as Toyota is quite preoccupied with the 86. Looks like the company would rather just devote its Fortuner budget to superficial upgrades. This is still one of Toyota's top-selling models anyway. Well, the pencil pushers in Japan would know.
For us, it's probably just the Japanese automotive giant's way of saying: "If it ain't broke, don't fix it."

Toyota Fortuner with VNT Turbo Diesel ( Toyota Fortuner turbo diesel intercooler )
Grand New Fortuner Diesel VNTurbo dengan Intercooler merupakan mesin baru yang menggunakan Variable Nozzle van Turbo (VNT) sehingga mampu memberikan tekanan udara yang lebih besar pada putaran mesin yang lebih rendah dan hasilnya torsi menjadi lebih besar di putaran mesin rendah.
Dari sisi tampilan sebenarnya tak ada perbedaan dengan diesel non-turbo. Perbedaannya mungkin bisa dilihat dari adanya air scoop di bagian kap mesin. Kapasitas mesin juga kabarnya sama yaitu D-4D 4-silinder, 2,5 liter hanya saja ditambahi turbo sehingga tenaganya lebih besar. Sedangkan untuk transmisi ditawarkan dua model manual 5-speed atau otomatis 4-speed.
Sampai saat ini tidak banyak sentuhan diberikan pada Toyota Fortuner. Kalaupun ada, lebih pada sentuhan pada beberapa panel kecil. Mungkin ini terkait dengan desainnya yang terlanjur solid cukup sulit diutak-atik.
Tahun ini ia kembali mendapatkan sentuhan pada sektor mesin. Unitnya masih sama, yaitu diesel 2KD-FTV 2.499 cc 4 silinder. Hanya saja turbonya ditambah perangkat berlabel variable nozzle vane. Toyota menyebutnya sebagai Variable Nozzle Turbocharger (VNT).
Dua belas bilah nozzle berada di dalam rumah keong mengelilingi turbin yang diputar oleh gas buang. Jumlah nozzle dibuat banyak agar memberikan tekanan secara merata ke turbin. Saat rpm rendah, turbo berputar pelan lantaran masih lemahnya dorongan udara. Mengakalinya, sudut antar nozzle dipersempit. Udara yang mengalir naik kecepatannya. Turbo pun berputar lebih kencang dan isapan udara segar ke intake semakin banyak. Analoginya seperti Anda menekan ujung selang agar air dapat menyembur jauh.
Positifnya, turbo lag yang biasa terjadi di putaran rendah dapat dihilangkan karena mesin tidak pernah kehabisan napas. Semakin efektif dengan imbuhan intercooler yang mendinginkan suhu udara dan memperbesar densitasnya di saluran masuk.
Kebalikannya ketika putaran mesin tinggi. Di kondisi ini, turbo sudah berputar cepat sehingga isapan udara juga lebih besar. Sudut nozzle diperlebar supaya turbo tidak overboost. Prinsipnya sangat sederhana bila dibandingkan turbo variabel lain yang bekerja langsung pada turbin.
Namun peningkatan dayanya terbilang signifikan. Ditunjang aplikasi intercooler, tenaga Fortuner naik dari 102 dk ke 144 dk. Torsinya juga naik dari 260 Nm ke 350 Nm. Semua menemui buktinya saat tes performa.
Untuk 0-100 km/jam, Fortuner diesel VNT mencatat waktu 12,42 detik. Sedangkan model lawas hanya 20,1 detik. Nyaris 8 detik selisihnya. Untuk akselerasi tengah, model baru ini masih lebih cepat sekitar 2 detik.
Peningkatan tenaga tidak membuatnya lebih boros BBM. Bahkan karena besarnya torsi di putaran bawah, ia lebih mudah melaju. Untuk rute tol dan dalam kota ia mencatat konsumsi BBM 14,6 km/l dan 11,8 km/l. Model lawas hanya 12,6 km/l dan 10,2 km/l.
Figur di atas juga lebih irit dari rival sejatinya, Mitsubishi Pajero Sport Dakar Hi-Power 4x2. SUV besar bertenaga 178 dk dan torsi 350 Nm ini hanya mencetak figur 13,2 km/l dan 9,8 km/l. Tapi Pajero unggul dalam akselerasi dengan menorehkan 10,60 detik untuk 0-100 km/jam.
Fortuner ini menggunakan suspensi TRD Sportivo yang lebih
keras dari aslinya. Cukup terasa, terutama saat menginjak speed trap
atau jalan berlubang. Lantaran besar, potensi buritan bergeser tetap
terasa saat menikung cepat.
Di bodi luar, aplikasi panel sporti TRD Sportivo terlihat di front bumper spoiler, front fender mirror, rear bumper spoiler, roof spoiler, dan muffler cutter. Imbuhan logo VNT berkelir merah di sisi kanan bagasi sebagai penegas eksistensinya.
Ke dalam, akomodasi lapang menjadi trademark-nya. Bahan fabric mewah menyelimuti bangku. Sedangkan bagian lain interior masih mengingatkan pada Kijang Innova. Kami merasa, sudah selayaknya Fortuner berubah total. Sambil menunggu terwujud, silakan menikmati lontaran torsi Fortuner diesel ini.

Fortuner Diesel seri sebelumnya menggunakan mesin 2 KD-FTV IL 4Cyl 16 Valve DOHC
D-4D dan sekarang diganti model 2 KD-FTV IL 4Cyl 16 Valve DOHC D-4D VN
Turbo Intercooler. Pada mesin baru ini menghasilkan daya maksimum 144
ps/3,400 rpm, ini berarti mengalami peningkatan dari mesin yang lama
dengan daya maksimum 102 ps/3,600 rpm. Begitu juga pada torsi maksimum
mengalami peningkatan sebesar 35 kgm/1,600-2,800 rpm dari 26.5
kgm/1,600-2,400 rpm.
Grand New Fortuner Diesel ini memiliki 4 tipe :

Perubahan lainnya selain mesin, Grand New Fortuner
Diesel VNTurbo mempunyai Hood Scoop pada bagian tengah kap mesin,
fungsinya untuk menyalurkan udara dingin ke Intercooler. Teknologi VN
(Variable Nozzle) berfungsi untuk mengontrol dalam mengoptimalkan
kinerja mesin turbo dalam menghasilkan output yang disalurkan ke seluruh
mesin.
Indonesia merupakan negara yang memiliki medan dan cuaca tropis yang
ekstrim sehingga banyak pelanggan memilih jenis mobil yang berkesan
tangguh, kuat, dan sporty. Jenis mobil tersebut yaitu Grand New Fortuner
Diesel.
Toyota mengatakan versi diesel saat ini akan dihapus dan untuk versi bensin masih tetap dijual dipasaran.
Cara membedakan dengan diesel non-turbo,
kita dapat melihat adanya sebuah air scoop di bonnet. Toyota Fortuner
hanya akan model dengan sistem 4x2.
Mesin masih mengadopsi sama dengan D-4D
4-silinder, 2,5 liter plus turbo. Di Afrika Selatan, mesin Fortuner VNT
2,5 liter menyemburkan tenaga 142 hp atau lebih besar dari 40 hp dari
diesel non-turbo. Masih versi Afsel, torsinya 343 Nm pada 1600-2800 rpm
atau naik 83 Nm dari diesel non-turbo.
Tipe TRD akan tetap dihadirkan selain
tipe G. Sistem transmisi terbagi dua pilihan yaitu manual 5-speed atau
otomatis 4-speed. Kabarnya Fortuner VNT dibandrol dengan harga Rp 390
juta dan Untuk versi termahal (TRD A/T) dibandrol dengan harga Rp 422
juta.
